According to Deadline, Boyega exited the film mid-shoot due to family reasons, with a search for his replacement currently under way.
A Netflix spokesperson said: "Rebel Ridge is pausing temporarily as we look to recast John Boyega, who needed to leave the project for family reasons.
"We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier's extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production.
"We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega's UpperRoom Productions, in addition to our upcoming film They Cloned Tyrone, in which he also stars."
Rebel Ridge began shooting in New Orleans last month.
Written and directed by Green Room filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier, the movie is described as an intense thriller which explores systemic American injustices.
The film also stars AnnaSophia Robb, Don Johnson, James Badge Dale and The OA's Emory Cohen.
In an Instagram post last month, Boyega could be seen in Louisiana where filming was taking place.
As recently announced, he will also return as Moses in Joe Cornish's long-awaited sequel Attack the Block 2.
Rebel Ridge will premiere on Netflix.
